Digital Choke Daynotes

What's a Daynote?

"Daynotes" are daily (usually) journal entries of interesting happening and discussions. They are not 'blogs', which are often just a collection of links to other information (although we do include links occasionally). Daynotes are much more interesting (we hope).

These "Digital Choke Daynotes" were inspired by the collection of daily journals of the "Daynotes Gang" (see sites at .com, .net), a collection of daily technical and personal observations from the famous and others. That group started on September 29, 1999, and has grown to an interesting collection of individuals. Readers are invited and encouraged to visit those sites for other interesting daily journals.

If you have comments, send us an email. A bit more about me is here. You might also enjoy our little story about the death of the 'net.

The "Gigapixel Project" has a camera capable of 4000 Giga (!) Pixels. The result is very impressive...you will be fascinated by the pictures and the technology.

Many of his images are on his web site at http://www.gigapxl.org . He's working on a "Portrait of America", and has a travelling exhibition. (It was just in the San Diego area.)

The gallery shows just some of his pictures, including 'zooms' to 0.05% of original size without loss of clarity. Quite impressive. The gallery pictures are available for personal download at resolutions from 1024 to 1920 pixels. Included in his gallery are pictures of Space Ship One.

I've grabbed several of the high-res pictures and am using them as the background on my computer desktop. The resolution and quality is quite stunning. I'd bet you'd find one that would be your favorite.

For users of the "Skype" internet-based telephone calling system, there is a critical update that needs to be installed.

The vulnerability will allow a nefarious web site to run commands on your computer if you click on a certain type of link on that web page. Most commonly, this vulnerability would be used to set up your computer as a 'bot' (robot), or remotely controlled computer. Once you are 'botted', the bad guy could gather information from your computer, send spam mail through your computer, or use your computer to 'attack' other web sites (denial of service attacks).

Skype has information here: http://www.skype.com/security/skype-sb-2005-02.html and http://www.skype.com/security/skype-sb-2005-03.html .

Skype users are strongly urged to update their software.

I spent some more time working on computer forensic tools, putting together a customized toolkit and techniques. More practice is needed to get more familiar with the techniques and information that is available.

John Dominik has a great story about 'one night in the pharmacy', and an embarrassing price check on some personal merchandise.
